With the aid of endoscopy (using a flexible observation tube, the endoscope), the interior structure of the instrument can be professionally inspected and documented.
Computed tomography and X-ray examinations are also conducted, revealing the condition of the instrument in detail and aiding in the identification of the maker.
In addition to dendrochronological reports and certificates of authenticity, multispectral analysis forms part of a violin’s documentation. This method can reveal retouching that is invisible to the naked eye, and can be used to identify additions to the varnish, overcoating, and the quality of varnish layers.
Certain dyes were only invented and used at specific points in history, making it possible to determine a terminus post quem.
