HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
THE FALKLANDS WAR
THE FALKLANDS WAR
In the novel, the Falklands war is very topical and there are also some political clashes between Miranda and Charlie.
Here a short summary:
The Falklands War was a conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom in 1982. It was fought over the Falkland Islands, a small group of islands in the South Atlantic Ocean. Argentina claimed the islands, which they call the Islas Malvinas, but they had been a British territory for many years. In April 1982, Argentina invaded and occupied the Falkland Islands, hoping to reclaim them.

The UK, led by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, responded by sending a large naval task force to retake the islands. After several weeks of fighting, the British forces were able to defeat the Argentine troops and regain control of the islands in June 1982.The war was short but intense, resulting in significant casualties on both sides. It had a major impact on both countries, boosting Thatcher's popularity in the UK and leading to political changes in Argentina. The Falklands War is remembered as a demonstration of Britain's determination to defend its territories and an example of modern naval and air warfare.
