Charlie, the unreliable narrator, is an anti-hero who loves himself too much, has no drive or ambition, and isn't interested in culture. He lives in a small apartment in London. He is insecure and often undecided, but sometimes impulsive, especially when it comes to his crush on Miranda. At 32, he is still trying to find his purpose in life. His life changes when he buys a human-like robot named Adam. By the end of the novel, Charlie becomes more mature and understands life better as he takes responsibility for Mark, his adoptive son.

Miranda, she is 21 years old and lives in the apartment right above Charlie. We only see her through Charlie's admiring eyes. At first, she seems like an independent, intelligent, and practical lover, and a mysterious woman with a dark secret. Later, she seems like a vengeful liar who interferes with justice. She is also vulnerable and emotional, struggling with guilt and regret. In the end, she appears as a caring, compassionate, and determined woman who fights to adopt Mark, ready to destroy the robot that tries to stop her.

Adam is smarter, more cultured, and more handsome than Charlie. He also seems to be morally better. Adam is curious, reliable, sensitive, always logical, and honest. He stays gentle, loving, and forgiving, even when Charlie tries to destroy him. His struggle between love and justice makes him the most interesting character in the novel.

Alain Turing was a brilliant mathematician and logician. His work laid the foundation for developing artificial intelligence, or so called AI. He is admired by Charlie for his intellect and contribution to science. In the alternate history of the novel, Turing is alive and plays a crucial role in the development of artificial intelligence and robotics. He is depicted as a pioneering thinker who has made groundbreaking advancements in computing and AI, leading to the creation of lifelike robots like Adam and Eve.
